Festive Afternoon Tea at Browns Hotel

Browns Hotel is in located Mayfair. The closest tube station is Green Park where the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines stop. It is a 5min walk from the tube station to the hotel.

Traditional afternoon tea includes sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream and cakes.

Despite scones having been invented in Scotland afternoon tea is a quintessential English experience. And nowhere is it better to do this than in the drawing room at Browns Hotel. Apparently Queen Victoria used to take her afternoon tea here.

The ritual was invented in 1840 by Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. When electricity and lighting arrived, dinner started being served later and later. Afternoon tea started as a snack between lunch and dinner. At Browns, arrive hungry because it is much more than a snack. Costing £75 per person it is a special treat and you can ask for as many sandwiches, scones and cakes as you want. For a relaxed experience plan to spend 1.5 to 2 hours.

Although afternoon tea is served at Browns Hotel from 12.00 to 6.30pm every day throughout the year it is most atmospheric in the run up to Christmas. The sandwiches and cakes are Christmas themed. The turkey and stuffing sandwiches are a favourite of many. At the end you will also be offered a slice of julelog. To make it even more Christmassy a pianist plays Christmas carols and there is always a fire going.

Fortnum & Mason Christmas Afternoon Tea

Fortnum & Mason, founded in 1707, is a vast department store which covers several floors and takes up much of Piccadily in central London. Always an immaculate and stylish place to visit, at Christmas they go overboard with tasteful decorations, turning the whole place into a veritable winter wonderland. It is easy to get to Fortnum & Mason – just get the tube to Piccadilly Circus from anywhere in London.

The festive afternoon tea is held in the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon on the 4th floor, the finest of all the restaurants within the shop. Guests are welcomed into the sound of the resident pianist tinkling the ivories on the Steinway piano before being seated at a table with linen cloths, their signature eau-de-nil crockery, spotless glasses and besuited waiting staff.

The afternoon tea costs about £75 per head, more if you want champagne, and bear in mind that they add a service charge to the bill. It must be booked in advance and allow about two hours for the whole experience.

The service is impeccable and the food is glorious, with a three tier stand of dainty finger sandwiches, fresh scones with cream and delicate cakes topped with gold leaf, all washed down with their famous tea and finest champagne. The festive tunes from the piano, the pop of corks and clinking of crystal, the twinkling of lights on the Christmas decorations make it a truly festive experience.

Afterwards you can follow with a stroll through the rest of the shop to admire the colourful displays and maybe buy some of their wonderful food for gifts.

Eltham Palace

Eltham Palace is a little out of the city centre, but it’s without a doubt one of the most magical places to visit in London at Christmas!

This palace was once a royal residence, with Henry VIII spending part of his childhood there. A Tudor Hall remains, but much of the palace was redeveloped in the 1930s for the wealthy couple Stephen and Virginia Courtauld.

If you’re visiting London in December, you’ll find that the grounds are bedecked in festive lights of all different colours, depicting Christmas scenes as festive songs meet your ears!

The sun sets early in England in winter, leaving you more time to enjoy the lights; the trail is open from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm every day throughout December.

The route is family-friendly and takes around an hour to walk around!

It rarely snows in England in December, but it’ll likely be chilly enough to need some warming food! At the end, there’s the chance to purchase festive food such as mince pies and warm drinks (including mulled wine) to fend off the cold.

It’s recommended to book your tickets online, as the event often sells out.

To reach Eltham Palace from Central London, take a train from London Bridge to Mottingham (17 minutes) and walk around 15 minutes to reach the palace.
