Losehill House Hotel & Spa, Peak District

If your idea of a romantic stay is to escape the hustle and bustle and find a remote location surrounded by stunning scenery, then Losehill House Hotel & Spa is a perfect option. Situated down a narrow country lane in the heart of the Peak District, this boutique hotel offers 22 rooms and suites, a spa, and exceptional dining, all overlooking Lose Hill and Win Hill. In fact, if you’re looking for Peak District spa days, Losehill is the only spa situated within the National Park, and the views from the outdoor hot-tub are divine.

Despite its remote location, it is possible to reach Losehill via public transport. Take a train from London to Sheffield, and then the Hope Valley line to Hope, where it’s a 5 minute taxi journey to the hotel (arrange your taxi through the hotel). However, driving is easier and there’s ample parking onsite.

The changing views across to Win Hill from the hotel are fascinating across the seasons, so there really is no ‘best time’ to visit, although the surrounding area does get rather busy over Easter and Summer school holidays.

If you can peel yourselves away from the cosy dining or hot tub views, there are some incredible walks in this region of the Peak District, with footpaths leading direct from the hotel to follow a circular route up Win Hill. Or perhaps head over to Castleton to walk Cave Dale, Mam Tor and the Great Ridge. There are also spectacular underground caverns to explore in this region of the National Park.

Red Lion, Clovelly

Clovelly is a charming harbor village located in northern Devon. It’s a 4.5 hour drive from London or the closest rail station is Barnstable, a 30 minute drive away. This remote village is a private village and entirely pedestrianized.

The Red Lion Inn is one of two hotels within the village itself, and located right on the harbor front. With the charming rooms and access to fantastic dining it makes for a fantastically romantic break. No need for any cars, the village has several places to visit, and plenty of different pubs, including the restaurant within the hotel. The hotel and the village are great for a 2 night stay, giving you access to everything within the village and plenty of time to relax and soak up the views.

Within Clovelly there are museums that showcase the way of life in this traditional village in years gone by, as well tea rooms to experience a true Devon cream tea, and the famous Clovelly donkeys. The north Devon coast is also absolutely stunning for an extended stay to enjoy a road trip along the Devon and Cornwall Coastline.

riverbeds wee luxury lodges

Riverbeds Luxury Wee Lodges, Glencoe

Riverbeds Luxury Wee Lodges, located right outside of Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands, is the perfect place for a romantic getaway.

Each group gets its own adorable tiny cabin, complete with your own deck, overlooking a rushing river and your own personal hot tub. Plus, a homemade breakfast will be delivered right to your door every morning—the most difficult choice you’ll have is whether to eat breakfast in bed or at the charming table on the patio.

There’s plenty to do at the grounds, including archery, clay shooting, or enjoying its sister property’s golf course, or alternatively, you can explore the Glencoe and Fort William area. For example, head out on the Lost Valley hike or ride the Jacobite Express, a vintage train that winds through some of the most scenic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Stay for at least a weekend—but, honestly, there’s so much to see in this area, you could easily spend a week here! If you’re looking to do lots of exploring, the summer is going to have the clearest weather.

From London, it’s a nine hour car ride north to Glencoe or, alternatively, a nine hour train ride. Alternatively, if you can snag some cheap airfare to Glasgow, the cabins are only about two hours away.

Inverlochy Castle

Inverlochy Castle, Fort William

Inverlochy Castle was built in 1863 and has now been converted to a luxury hotel. It is located close to Fort William which is in the Scottish highlands.

From London you can either get the overnight train to Fort William or fly to Inverness or Glasgow and drive from there. The benefit of flying and renting a car is that you will be able to see much more of the surrounding area since public transport is limited. Being close to Fort William the hotel is in a good location for an overnight stay on a trip from Inverness to Skye.

April to October is the best period to visit. During this time there are plenty of things to do such as climbing Ben Nevis, watching the “Harry Potter train” cross the Glenfinnan viaduct or visiting the Small Isles.

Also make sure you plan time to spend around the hotel. Play a game of snooker, relax with a book in front of a fire in one of the opulent living rooms or take the rowing boat out on the lake in the hotel grounds.

Although summer has the best weather the hotel is fantastic for a romantic break at any time of year. Inverlochy Castle is expensive but rates are lower in the winter. If staying for just one night you will be able to enjoy the hotel but if you can afford it stay for 2 or 3 nights to enjoy everything the surrounding area has to offer.

Dalhousie Castle 2

Dalhousie Castle Hotel, Edinburgh

One of our favorite romantic stays in the UK is Dalhousie Castle Hotel and Aqueous Spa. This gorgeous 13th century castle is located 8 miles outside of Scotland’s bustling capital city of Edinburgh. We like visiting the area in May and October, as the weather is just right and crowds in Edinburgh are low.

Couples will love staying in the castle’s royally decorated rooms and relaxing in the luxurious spa which offers a wide range of beauty and therapeutic packages. A scrumptious afternoon tea is served in the Orangery, and there’s nothing quite like enjoying dinner at the award winning restaurant in the castle’s dungeon! Did we mention there is also a secret bar behind a moving bookcase?

Dalhousie Castle has plenty to offer in the way of outdoor activities as well. The falconry has an impressive array of birds that you can book experiences with. You can also take archery lessons with a traditionally crafted recurve bow and a variety of fun targets to choose from. One of the most relaxing things to do though is stroll around the castle grounds and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Old Course Hotel, St Andrew

Love golf, the beach, and history? Well, then St. Andrews, Scotland is the perfect romantic stay in the UK for you. (It’s also home to the University of St. Andrews, where Prince William and Kate Middleton studied and met!)

Unfortunately, there is no train station at St. Andrews. The closet is Leuchars, so you can take a train from Kings Cross to Edinburgh, then change for Leuchars, and take either a bus or Uber from Leuchars to town. Sounds like a bit of a hassle, but it’s well worth it! Alternatively, you could fly from London to Edinburgh, then make the same connection.

The Old Course Hotel is a 5-star Golf Resort & Spa that is situated right next to the famous golf course, perfect for golf lovers. It’s also close to the beach so great for romantic walks by the waters in the morning. An easy walk to town, but not right smack in the middle of the shops, so it’ll never get too busy. One of the better hotels in town, it’s the ideal place to spoil your partner and yourself.

Given that the journey here isn’t the shortest- at least 6 hours- I’d recommend staying for the weekend. St. Andrews only has 3 streets, so if you’re not renting a car and exploring the nearby villages, the town will only be able to keep you occupied for so long! Within the town itself, St. Andrews Castle and St. Andrews Cathedral are both worth visiting. It’s ticketed entry to the castle, but University students have been known to climb the walls in the wee hours to watch the sunrise. You get a terrific view over the waters.

Scottish weather is known for being cold and dreary. The seawaters help to moderate the temepratures somewhat, but it still gets very windy. For the best weather, I’d recommend visting between May to August. (Having said that, it has been known to hail in May in St. Andrews!) If you prefer not to have your romantic stay intruded on by rowdy University students, visit between June and August- that’s when the students are off for their summer holidays. However, you may need to book accommodation early as this is also when all the visiting golfers start coming to town.

Ness Walk, Inverness

Ness Walk Hotel is located in the city of Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. It is a luxurious 5-star hotel with an amazing location, right on the banks of the River Ness, providing a breathtaking scenery that perfectly fits for romantic riverside strolls.

The hotel itself looks modern and elegant with beautifully designed rooms and suites. Some rooms offer superb views over the River Ness, creating a romantic ambiance. The main building was originally a 19th century house that has been tastefully restored and now it is home to the hotel’s lounge, bar, and Torrish Restaurant. The hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, Torrish, is a great place for a delicious romantic dinner with River Ness views.

Spending at least 2 nights is ideal for exploring the area. The hotel is located within walking distance of the city center. You can visit St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Greig Street Suspension Bridge, and Inverness Castle which sits on the highest point in Inverness, overlooking the city and the River Ness. It is an ideal spot for couples to enjoy a romantic sunset together. Also, the iconic Loch Ness is just a few minutes drive away, with the beautiful Urquhart Castle sitting on it.

The best time to visit Inverness and Scotland in general is the summer as it can a be a great time for a Scottish Road Trip, but the shoulder seasons, Spring and Autumn, are also good seasons to visit. Although it will be colder, the fewer crowds and some snowfall might add to the romantic atmosphere.

To get to Inverness from London you can go by car which is around a 10-hour drive. By a direct train which will take around 8 hours, tickets can be purchased through Trainline. Alternatively you take a 1.5-hour flight, however make sure to also factor in transport time to and from airport on either end.

O Dan Y Coed Swedish Log Cabin, Chwilog

O Dan Y Coed Swedish Log Cabin in Chwilog, Wales, stands out as one of the most romantic stays in the UK, offering a perfect blend of tranquillity, breathtaking scenery, and fantastic amenities. Nestled amidst the picturesque Welsh landscape, this log cabin is an idyllic retreat for couples seeking a romantic getaway.

With its own hot tub, private garden, sea and mountain views and all the facilities you need for a getaway, this is absolutely one of the best places to stay in North Wales.

You can reach the area of Chwilog in just over 5 hours from London and it is one of the most stunning journeys. Driving is the easiest way to get here but you can also get the train to Machynlleth and then to the nearest train station of Penychain. From here you can then use the local bus services to get around.

Northern Ireland

streamvale

The Pods, Streamvale

The Pods at Streamvale are located on Streamvale Farm in Northern Ireland is the perfect destination to get away from the bustling city. The pods offer stunning views of hills and farmland each with a cosy, private garden. The pods provide a peaceful haven for couples to reconnect and switch off in nature.

Streamvale Farm is approximately a 10-minute drive from Belfast City Airport and 35 minutes from Belfast International, making the location perfect for those who still want some time to explore the city. Streamvale is also well-connected by public transport routes into Belfast City Centre.

The Pods at Streamvale make for the perfect romantic stay as each comes with a fire pit and a hot tub. Breakfast and s’more kits can be added to your booking to add a bit of fun to your stay. Free farm entrance is also included and an early morning visit is best to make the most of the quiet crowds. Visiting while the farm has puppies during the summer is a must as the snuggle time is just the best!

While the pods would make a great home for one night, I’d recommend staying for two or three to make the most of the beautiful views, surroundings and hot tub of course! The Pods at Streamvale are open from spring through to early autumn, but the best time to stay is definitely in June or July when the weather is at its best.
